Critical Thinking Skills with John McMahon

Our only session with John McMahon was really interesting.

What I liked about it was a good mix of practical activities and some theoretical ideas.

We split into 2 groups and we had to watch 2 different videos from YouTube:

The Black Hole

and then we had to swap and tell each other what the video was about.

To make sure the students really understood the content of the story we might ask them to ask each other questions about the video they haven't seen.

Another possibility is that teachers have pre-prepared sets of questions to ask the students who haven't seen the video.

Nice activity: the class or group will have to report the story saying 1 sentence each.

Next step will be to guide the students to more creative tasks, raising the level of their thinking from LOTS (low order thinking skills) to Hots (High level thinking skills).

Possible HOTS questions:

What brought the 2 guys in the 2 videos to act like that?

Would you have behaved the same?

What is the connection between the 2 titles?

What if the boy badly needed the money?

What if the boy had kept the money and given it to Charity?

Can you please write a different ending to the story?

Who is the worse guy?

What if the boss had come in?

What if the shop assistant had been young?
